Setterlin History
Setterlin is a family owned commercial construction company that provides outstanding construction services throughout central and southern Ohio. The tradition began in 1935, when Robert W. Setterlin, Sr. founded Robert W. Setterlin & Sons. For four generations, we’ve been providing award-winning construction services that have had a lasting impact on our clients and our community.
Historical Timeline
1930s:
Robert W. Setterlin & Sons Co., formed by Robert W. Setterlin, Sr. started by completing numerous school projects throughout Ohio.
1940s:
Completed projects related to the United States Defense, such as Armstrong Furnace Foundry Company in Jackson, Ohio.
1950s:
Ohio School for the Deaf, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Upper Arlington High School and many other schools around central Ohio.
1960s:
The unique Ohio Historical Society Building and the expansion of Capital University, including the dedication of Setterlin Hall.
1970s:
Completed many projects for the expansion of Ohio State University, Grange Insurance Headquarters, and Franklin County Hall of Justice.
1980s:
The Limited, Inc. Distribution Centers I, II and III, Headquarters Building and Shipping Facility. Many projects for the White Castle Company.
1990s:
Franklin Park Conservatory for Ameriflora, the new North Market, Ohio State Medical Association Headquarters and the Ohio University Grover Center.
2000s:
Worthington Christian Church expansion, various projects with Ohio University, Columbus Zoo, Columbus Regional Airport Authority, and over $100 million in school construction.
2010s:
Ohio University’s Academic & Research Center as well as six other projects at OU, CNG Stations, ODOT Vinton County Facility, and work for various retail clients including Jimmy John's and Krogers.
2020s:
Ohio Wesleyan University Slocum Hall renovation, multiple ODOT rest areas, and Blacklick Woods Metro Park's Canopy Walk is a few of our notable projects so far. We also crossed the milestone of having over 100 employees.

SAFETY
Safety is an essential factor in a successful project.
Setterlin strives to eliminate all unsafe conditions on the job site. Safety is more than OSHA compliance — it’s our way of doing business and it’s the attitude of our people.
We have received many awards for our safety program from national organizations such as the Associated General Contractors of America, as well as the Builders Exchange and Stephen B. Ogle Associates.
Corporate Safety Awards:
- The Associated General Contractors of America Certificate of Commendation For Safety Excellence – more than 25% below the division incidence rate
- The Builders Exchange Safety Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding safety accomplishments
- Golden Hard Hat Award for Outstanding Safety Achievement by Stephen B. Ogle & Associates, Inc.
- The Associated General Contractors of America Certificate of Merit for Safety Excellence – Zero Incidence Rate

Setterlin’s award-winning safety program includes the following elements:
- Safety Incentive Program
- Employee safety committee
- Employee safety orientation and training
- Weekly jobsite “Tool Box” meetings
- 100% Hard Hat rule for all employees and jobsites
- CPR and first aid training for all field personnel
- Chain of command process for safety reporting
- Independent agency inspects each jobsite
- Equipment training and inspection checklist for all employees
- Subcontractors are encouraged to participate in the OSHA 10 and 30 hour courses
- Weekly safety inspections by our in-house safety director
